Context
Ursula von der Leyen has been the president of the European Commission since 2019 and has previously served in the German government in Angela Merkel's cabinet. She is a member of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the European People's Party, which represents Christian democratic and liberal conservative parties in the European Parliament.
Earlier this year, there had been much speculation about whether von der Leyen would run for a second term in the 2024 EU elections, and it was recently announced that although she will not run in Germany for a seat in the European Parliament, she may still become the lead candidate for president of the European Commission.
The EU elections are scheduled for June 6-9, 2024 and will take place in all 27 EU member states.
