Context
On May 12, 2022 Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) introduced the Digital Platform Commission Act, which plans to create an expert federal body to provide “comprehensive, sector-specific regulation of digital platforms to protect consumers, promote competition, and defend the public interest.” On May 19, Rep. Peter Welch introduced an identical bill in the House of Representatives.
The new Digital Platform Commission would have the authority to develop and enforce rules, impose civil penalties, hold hearings, conduct investigations, and support research. It would also designate certain digital platforms as “systematically important,” making them subject to additional oversight, regulation, and merger review.
